It was Sunday morning and we were headed to church, my husband barreling 25 mph down our narrow little driveway while I tried to apply lipstick. My daughter talked our ears off from the backseat. Typical Sunday morning.
As we came to an abrupt, there-goes-my-lipstick-job stop at the end of our driveway, I happened to glance out my window. And there, in the orange clay mud of east Tennessee, amidst the stray gravel and roadside fast-food trash, was a gorgeous morning glory blossom—bathed in purple and white, facing the rising sun.
I couldn’t see her roots or even that she had any friends around her. She was all alone and she certainly hadn’t sprung from a lush foundation of topsoil.
Yet still she stood tall, waving gracefully at me, reminding me that God can create blooms from even the most unattractive situations, when there’s little to work with… in the least ideal circumstances.
This Saturday night I’m the keynote speaker for the Bloom Women’s Conference at Hope Church in Gray, TN. The topic? Bloom Where You’re Planted.
I’ll be discussing the embarrassing, disgraceful things we all do from time to time—the pasts we run from and the shame we bear on a daily basis. God wants us not only to confess those things and let them go, but also to use them in ways that will magnify Him and serve others.
If you’re in the area, I do hope you can join us. If you’re struggling with church hurt, guilt, or feelings of not being good enough, I hope you can join us. And if you’re looking for new friends who will build you up and point you toward heaven, I hope you can join us.
Is there any better way to spend your Saturday night than surrounded with likeminded sisters in Christ, worshipping God?
Imagine if all of us, like the radiant morning glory, would use the mud and gravel at our feet to push us toward the sun. The Son. And imagine what an encouragement we might be to those around us if we forgot ourselves and set our sights higher, on the perfect one who stood in our place.
I can’t wait to see you bloom.
